PSUK Swim Team add more World Records
The British Masters Championships took place from 17th-19th June 2011 at the John Charles Centre for Sport, Leeds.
12 PSUK swimmers competed at the three day event. The team as a whole had a very successful weekend. They continued their success from earlier in the year adding a further 2 Masters World Records in the relay events.
The first World record was broken in the Mixed 400m freestyle relay lead off by Nigel Gaskin, West Midlands followed by Aimee Ramm, Leicestershire, Vickie Bates, West Midlands with Brian Steatham, West Midlands bringing the team home in a time of 3.57.96, taking some 9 seconds off the previous World Record. Later in the day Gaskin & Steatham were joined by Matt Adamson, Staffordshire and Ed Clayton, Lancashire in the Men’s 800m freestyle relay who took 3 ½ seconds off the previous World Record, recording a time of 8.23.64.
Clayton had already broken the British Record in the 35-39yrs 100m butterfly in a time of 58.77 he also won the 50m butterfly event.
Team Manager, Claire Thorn, West Midlands had an excellent championships in the 40-44yr age group. Thorn won her 50m & 100m breastroke & 200m freestyle, she also came 2nd in the 400m freestyle & 200m breastroke & 3rd in the 1500m freestyle.
Geoff Boddie, Merseyside won the 35-39yr 200m breastroke ahead of team mate David Morgan, Gwent; however the results were turned when Morgan took the 100m breastroke title, 0.3 seconds ahead of Boddie. Morgan’s winning streak continued in the 50m breastroke.
Adamson had a good championship in the 30-34yr age group, taking gold in the 400m & 200m f/s and 3rd 200m butterfly. In the same age group Gaskin came 2nd in 400, 200 & 100m freestyle.
Ramm came 1st in 50m freestyle & 2nd in the 50m butterfly & Steatham 1st in 50m breastroke & 3rd 50m freestyle, 25-29yr age group.
Angie Fisher, West Midlands (R) came 3rd in the 55-59yr 400m freestyle.
The team built on their relay successes by taking gold in the Women’s 200m Medley Team which was made up of Shona Douse, Strathclyde, Thorn, Bates & Ramm. Gold was also achieved by the Mixed 200m Medley Team of Adamson, Steatham, Ramm & Bates (100+yrs); Ryan Long, West Midlands, Morgan, Douse & Thorn (72+yrs); Mixed 200m freestyle team; Steatham, Ramm, Bates & Gaskin (100+yrs); Adamson, Douse, Thorn & Long (72+yrs). The Men’s 200m medley team of Long, Morgan, Adamson & Steatham took bronze in the 72+yrs age group.
The strength of the team showed through over the course of the weekend, they amassed 12 gold, 7 silver & 4 individual bronze medals and 28 gold & 4 relay bronze medals.
