ASA National Masters 2011

PSUK SWIMMING TEAM BREAK WORLD RECORDS

The British Gas ASA National Masters and Senior Age Group Championships (25m) 2011 took place at Ponds Forge International Sports Centre, Sheffield from 28th-30thOctober.

The 18 strong PSUK swimming team had a fantastic weekend breaking several World, European and British master’s records.

World, European & British Records were broken by Brian Steatham, Hayley Bird & Nigel Gaskin all West Midlands and Aimee Ramm Leicestershire in the Mixed 4 x 100m freestyle relay. Their time of 3.42.99 seconds was an incredible 9 seconds faster than the previous World Record.   The same four swimmers broke the European and British records in the 4 x 50m freestyle team in a time of 1:43.59.

British records were broken by Hayley Bird & Victoria Bates (West Mids), Caroline Bell (Lancs) & Aimee Ramm in the women’s 4 x 50m Medley relay. The ladies went on to also break the British record in the 4 x 100m Medley relay in a time of 4:36:92. The Men also broke the British record in the 4 x 100m Medley relay which consisted of Chris Jones (South Wales), Nick Polkinghorne (Devon & Cornwall), Brian Steatham & Nigel Gaskin.

The team also won gold medals in the following relays:

Mixed 4 x 50m Medley team – 100+ Hayley Bird, Caroline Bell, Matt Adamson (Staffs) & Brian Steatham and in the 120+ of Chris Jones, Nick Polkinghorne, Aimee Ramm & Victoria Bates.

Nick Polkinghorne won all his individual events in the 40-44yrs 50, 100 & 200m breastroke, Nick broke British records in the 50m breastroke in a time of 29.90 seconds and another British record in the 100m touching in a time of 1:06.31.

Hayley Bird did several personal bests and won the 25-29yrs 100m backstroke in a time of 65.59 seconds, the 50m backstroke in a time of 30.81 seconds, Hayley also came 3rd in the 50m fly.

Chris Jones had a successful meet winning the 40-44yrs 100m backstroke and coming 2nd in the 4x1 Individual Medley. Brian Steatham had an excellent weekend winning the 25-29yrs 100m breastroke in a time of 65.12 seconds. Aimee Ramm came 2nd in the 25-29yrs 50m fly.

Claire Thorn (West Midlands) had a good weekend in the 40-44yrs, coming 2nd in the 200m freestyle and 3rd in the 800m freestyle and 200m breastroke events. Alison Willis (West Midlands) came third in the 35-39yrs 4x1 Individual Medley.

Other relay medallists were:

Garry Dixon (Thames Valley), Sara Gamble & Ryan Long (West Mids) & Rachel Vallins (Dorset) who took bronze in the Mixed 72+yrs 4 x 50m medley team. Garry, Brian, Ryan & Nigel won silver in the men’s 4 x 50m medley team 72+yrs, in the same event 120+yrs Chris, Nick, Richard Evans (Met) & Matt won the bronze medal. In the Mixed 4 x 50m freestyle team 160+yrs, Nick, Alison, Claire & Richard won the silver medal.
