ASA National Masters 2012

2012's British Short Course Masters Swimming Championships were a great success for the GB Police Swimming Team, the first day proved the most successful with a European Master Record & 4 British Master Records being recorded by the team.

Chris Jones (South Wales), won the 40-44 yrs 200m backstroke in a new GB Masters Record time of 2.10.99, Chris also won the 100m backstroke in a time of 60.27. Nick Polkinghorne (Devon & Cornwall) won both the 40-44 yrs 50m & 100m breastroke events, Nick's time for the 100 of 65.70 was a new GB Masters Record. Brian Steatham (West Midlands) won the 25-29 yrs 50m breastroke in a new GB Masters' Record time of 28.74, Brian went on to take 3rd in the 100m freestyle event. Jones, Polkinghorne & Steatham were joined by Ed Clayton (Lancashire) in the Men's 4 x 100m Medley Relay where they smashed the existing GB Masters Record by over 6 seconds posting a time of 3.57.60 & also breaking the European Record in the process.

Hannah Paull (Avon & Somerset) had a great competition; winning the 35-39 yrs 200m freestyle in 2.13.76 & four bronze medals in the 100 & 400m freestyle and 50m & 100m fly events. Aimee Ramm (Leicestershire) won the 30-34 yrs 100m freestyle in 59.13 & also gained three silver medals in the 50m & 100m fly and 50m freestyle. Joining Paull & Ramm in the Women's 120-159 yrs 4 x 50m freestyle & medley relays were Vic Standen & Ali Willis (West Midlands), winning gold and silver respectfully. Individual silver medals were won by Standen in the 25-29 yrs 50m freestyle & Willis in the 40-44 yrs 4x1 Individual Medley. Angie Fisher (Ret West Midlands) won gold in the 55-59 yrs 1500m freestyle & bronze in the 100m backstroke event.

The men were just as successful, with Clayton winning the 35-39 yrs 200m fly, he also took silver in the 100m fly & bronze in both the 50m & 100m fly. Nigel Gaskin (West Midlands), picked up two silvers in the 35-39 yrs 200m Individual Medley & 400m freestyle & bronze in the 200m freestyle. While Adam O'Grady (Metropolitan) won a bronze in the 25-29 yrs 50m fly.

Gold medals were won in the men's 120-159 yrs 4 x 50 m Medley (Jones, Steatham, Clayton & Gaskin) & silver in the 4 x 50m freestyle events (Steatham, Steve Slee (Thames Valley), Gaskin & O'Grady.

Medals were also flowing thick and fast in the mixed relays; in the 120-159 yrs 4 x 50m medley Clayton, Steatham, Ramm & Standen took gold; the 4 x 50m freestyle relay of Steatham, Ramm, Standen & O'Grady also won gold as did the 160-199 yrs 4 x 50m medley relay of Jones, Polkinghorne, Paull & Delyth Cunnah (Tayside).
